DO NOT get an Aveo. I got a brand new 2009 Aveo new 6 months ago and have since put 14,000 miles on it. The trunk no longer closes. The passenger airbag only comes on 25% of the time. There are numerous electrical problems. The entire instrument panel sometimes works, sometimes doesn't, the interior and truck light no longer work. To make things worse, GM customer support has been less than helpful. Its cheap (thats why ( got it) but not worth it. I owned a 1995 Jetta for two years and had less problems. This doesn't help narrow your choices down much, but will hopefully save you some trouble.

The new Corolla and Matrix are the sedan and wagon version of the same car. The ride and handle the same basd on comparable trim levels. The Yaris is a lower-level car. All three will be reliable. The new Camry may have issues but the Corolla won't. It uses essentially the same drivetrain as the previous one. The Camry has an all new one. Based on passed personal experience and passed Corollas using same engine, th Corolla should still be a winner. Th question should be Corolla or Matrix. Yaris hts 45mpg in smaller package but my mother's 2006 Corolla delivers 42mpg and he newer one will still be get around 40 mpg eventhough it's bigger. The same applies to the Matrix- since it is the Corolla wagon simply labelled "crossover." Semantics!!!

I think the best value is the Matrix. You get more interior room and flexibility due to the hatchback setup.

The Corolla and the Matrix are on the same platform. So MPG & acceleration are comparable. But the Matrix is more sporty in terms of handling and looks. They were both redesigned this year, however the Corolla looks almost exactly the same (which is to say very bland). The Matrix is better looking in my opinion.

As for the Yaris, it gets good MPG and is cheap but other than that has little to offer. They don't come with much standard equipment, to keep the pricing down. The interior is very loud, especially at highway speeds. The seats are not very supportive, and the interior plastics would embarrass even GM.

In summary, if you ONLY care about MPG get a Yaris. If you want something nicer and don't care anything about what you drive, get a Corolla. If you want additional capabilities and sportiness, get a Matrix.

The Yaris' only attraction is fuel economy (still not that amazing at 36 MPG highway), its interior is the worst of any new car, and it is not nearly safe as some of its competition. The Matrix is completely the same as the Pontiac Vibe, except for its styling. I would choose the Vibe because, you could talk the dealer down more, and you would help an American manufacturer. The new Corolla has little over the old one, or as Car and Driver put it "no quantum leap forward" The previous Corolla was reliable, but the 2009 is too new to tell. The Camry and Tundra have below average reliability or worse from Consumer Reports, and by my guess the Corolla should follow along with that trend. The Saturn Astra would be a good equivalent to any of them. It is more expensive than a Yaris, but bigger and better. It costs the same as a Corolla od Yaris, but comes with many more features. The Astra did so well in Europe's crash testing, it was rated as Car and Drivers top safety pick for cars under $25000, but has yet to be tested by the NHTSA. The Saturn Astra is a rebadged Opel Astra, the second best selling car in Europe. It is made in Belgium, and imported to the US.The Astra's consumer rating from Edmunds.com is higher than any model made by Toyota. Here is a direct comparison between the Astra and the Toyotas:

the yaris scored low in consumer reports tests.

the Honda fit is it's equivalent and is a much better car.

the Corolla & Matrix are both redesigned for 2009 and are too new for reliability to be known. previous models scored well.

the Corolla is a 4dr sedan and the Matrix is a hatchback version of it. it's twin is the Pontiac Vibe

Matrix is offered in base, S and XRS trim levels. The standard 1.8-liter engine produces 132 horsepower and 128 lb-ft of torque with estimated fuel economy of 26/32 city/highway with 5-speed manual and 25/31 with automatic.

The Yaris will get you the best gas mileage, but safety concerns due to size are something to weigh before purchasing. The Corolla is a bit bigger, with a larger engine and the fuel economy is a little bit worse... the car will last ten or more years and will probably still be driving when a Chevy is sitting rusting in a junk yard... I am on my second Corolla... the first one lasted over 300 K miles and 12 years... this one I have now is 3 years old and I have close to 100 K miles !

They are all the same as for engines. And the heavier the car the safer it is.

Yarus is small and light and gets great gas mileage. The Matrix is nothing but a Corolla Station Wagon.

I would look at them in terms of use and comfort.

my option

Corolla 13,999 you get decent amoun of space, its got the new look, you get ok pick speed, will last about 200,000 miles if you take of it. 30mpg

Yaris 12,999 best value 45 mpg but small not that safe.

Matrix sporty hatch back more room then the other, better pick up speed, ABS TRAC and VSC are all options.30 mpg

With the gas price going up i would get the Yaris, then matrix , then corolla
