Reliable? Yes. Boring? Very. I wouldn't get a corolla. They did very badly in the small-offset crash test. They have a 4-speed automatic transmission that's 10 years old. The only one worth buying has the 5-speed manual transmission. The interior quality is meh. I would get a Mazda 3 or Ford Focus. The Chevy Sonic hatchback with the 1.4 turbo engine is very solid, fun car too.

If you are truly looking for reliability you really can't pick a better make than toyota. They have some of the highest reliability and resale values in the industry.

Depending on which model corolla it is the transmission can vary. The LE comes with a 4 speed automatic standard. The L comes with a 5 speed manual standard and an optional 4 speed automatic. The S comes with a 5 speed manual standard and a 5 speed automatic optional.

Also if you can find a used 2013 at a toyota dealership then you should see if it is a TCUV (toyota certified used vehicle). They go through a much more rigorous inspection and have extended warranties beyond what most used cars are able to offer.

If you are looking for a new one that is great as well. Toyota always offers toyotacare which is 2 years/25000 miles and roadside assistance for 2 years all for free on new toyotas.

The Kia Forte would be an excellent option for you. It is compact, gets great gas milage and has a modern and sporty look. Check your local dealership for CPO (certified pre-owned) vehicles, which come with an extended warranty. Good luck!
