1982, in Fremont California.
Some USDM Toyota models are still manufactured in Japan. Easy way to tell is by the VIN number...
1 = USA: NUMMI
2 = Canada: TMMC
4 = USA: TMM & NUMMI
J = Japan

They have been building cars in America since the early 1980s. I remember Toyota opening up their plant in Georgetown, Kentucky back around 1986-1988 or so.
The cars are made of a mixture of parts being shipped in from Japan and parts which are made at Toyota plants and 3rd party suppliers here in the USA.
They still have many cars which are shipped in already built.

they're assembled in usa. i think of Honda and Hyundai even have vegetation. It relies upon on the automobile variety, actual, some are nevertheless assembled in Japan. it truly works for that reason, because of the fact it isn't any longer labeled as an imported automobile. it is an "American-assembled" automobile. additionally, those distant places automobile businesses choose individuals to experience mushy procuring those autos, and a few of those autos are purely bought interior the U. S., like the massive SUV's. They make sufficient money that they could arise with the money for the extra expenditure, and it is of their activity to make usa experience like the autos they're procuring are being assembled in usa with the help of American workers. Likewise, Ford ought to sometime open up a production unit in China, considering the fact that extra Ford autos are being bought in China than in usa. it truly works the two procedures.

It has something to do with business, investment and US laws. I think in the past, they ship the completed products here, but there might be restrictions (import regulations etc...) on that, so they thought it would be more cost effective if they just started building stuff here that is to be sold here in the first place.
