I have a 1993 Toyota Camry (automatic) that runs well enough. However, for months now, it is having problems in first gear. Namely, it will simply not accelerate fast enough. The catch is that it doesn't do it all the time.

Only once or twice has it given me issues in first gear when I start. It is often triggered whenever I come to rest at a stop light and then try to proceed and almost always when I am coming off of a parkway.

Ultimately, I am going to take my car into the shop next month as I have a week off of work, but I am trying to gauge things. I don't know much about cars, so I am hoping you tell me it is something simple like tranny fluid, a nut or bolt here or there, or something like that. I gather trannies are expensive.

Two other things to know. I can tell when it is about to start by looking at my panel, the light indicating Overdrive will start randomly flashing. Also, after driving the car, it has a funny smell, almost like something is burning.

The longer you wait the worst it will get. Check the tranny fluid.

sounds like ur trans is slipping , leave ur car running and open the hood , there is a dip stick just like for oil but says trans fluid should be close to the windshield area , pull the stick and wipe it with a paper towel if the fluid is still nice and red it might be just clutch belts slipping , but if it is black or gray looking or low then u might as well figure on buying one from a junk yard and have it replaced ( sometimes the junk yard will sell it to u and do the repairs ) with a warrenty ,,, if u check the fluid with the car not running then it will show a quart low , that is why u leave it running to check it and it should show perfect unless there is a major problem

Hope you know that transmission fluid needs to be changed too. Especially if you drove over a big pool of water too often or allow moisture to get into the transmission.



There are also filter in transmission too, but not much change is needed on that. That smell means you have old transmission fluid.

We had a 1993 Toyota Camry LE that we gave away with 211,00 miles bec my wife got a new Toyota Highlander SUV 6 cylinder AWD. We have owned 5 Toyotas from brand new and only once on 1980 Toyota Corolla Station Wagon did I ever experience ATF transmission problems and FYI overhaul is extremely expensive like $1,500 many years ago and the guarantee warranty is not the best meaning it is not exactly like brand new that I personally know coworkers and family that paid and then ended up trading/selling the vehicle..



If I were in Your Shoes before it gets worse (might be already too late but you never know) simply Do Yourself and Your Camry a FAVOR and Don't Take ATF problems Lightly "Stop in service station and ask a mechanic drain the ATF fluid & refill with Dexron III." Hopefully just this CRITICAL PREVENTIVE MAINTENANCE task which should be done every 25,000 to 30,000 miles will extend the life on your IF-FY Automatic Transmission bec I had misplaced my 10mm Alllen Hex Wrench but my mechanic advised me to buy a new set bec the owner charge $30 for ATF Drain & Refill which I believe your Camry will take like 2 quarts of Dexron III! In fact after spending the Big $$$ to do a transmission overhauI, bec I change my own oil, I made it a regular practice for ATF drain & refill every 3rd oil change like 15,000 miles bec Dexron III ATF Fluid is cheap like $3 to $5 per quart and transmission overhaul or when I have to put out like $500 to $1000 bec on older vehicle then it makes me think twice, how long will it last?



Bottomline unless you're a mechanic, (i) drain the ATF more frequently after vehicle reached 100K mile plateau like every 2nd or 3rd oil change rather as most experts recommend every 25,000 or 30,000 miles. It's quite simple with the right tools bec one simply opens the ATF drain plug, then measures how much came out and then refill like 2 to 3 quarts of ATF according to the manufacturer specifications via skinny ATF tube. Older vehicles used to use DEXRON III ATF but newer ones use more sophisticated ATF that it is extremely critical not to refill with wrong ATF, otherwise troubles begin and TRANSMISSIONS are expensive to overhaul & fix and often times never the same that people give up and trade-in as lessons learned experience.

Do the tranny flush and filter like everyone else said but also look into Bar’s Leaks Automatic Transmission Repair, tried it on my girls car and it worked really well.

1 question. Did you do all maintenance? If not you need to bring in as you have timing belt, tranny, engine injection system. Someone who did not take care may call for a engine rebuild or drive until it drops.

check the tranny fluid, is it bright red or dark, burnt smelling?



you may try changing the tranny filter, it may help.



how many miles, has the transmision filter ever been changed?



you are looking at a couple thou if the transmision is going out

How long has it been since you serviced your transmission? You may be very low on tranmission fluid for starters plus a dirty filter.
