Question:
Toyota Prius Manual confusion?

Is it just me, or is the Prius owners manual really hard to read and understand?

The order of the information is illogical, - some stuff that you need when you first use the car is at the back of the book. Some information is at the front of the book, but you have to refer to two or three other pages before you get the full picture. Pure chaos.

Worst of all is the seperate book for the Sat Nav. I have owned the car for about a month, and still not got to grips with how to use it.

I had a Volvo before, and the manual was so logically set out - This Toyota effort is so unToyota like. The car itself is brilliant, but it seems to me that they gave the job of writing the manual to someone who had only done two years of English.

Is there an alternative on the web that I can refer to or does anyone have any other ideas?

Yeah, the owner's manual may not be the easiest read, but there's a lot of good stuff in there that you should get through at some point.

I was going to suggest the shorter Pocket Reference Guide that came with your car, but I don't know if Toyota is still providing those with the newest model year... http://prg.toyotapartsandservice.com/ used to only show one from 2005 or 2006, but as of my typing that site isn't responding properly...

Your best bet would probably be to go with the user-generated User Guide: http://john1701a.com/prius/prius-userguide.htm

as for the Navigation:

Gen5 Navigation tutorial (for a Lexus, but same as on the 2006-current Prius):

Gen4 Navigation tutorial (for a Lexus, but same as on the 2004-2005 Prius):

Here is a GREAT alternative to the standard issue Owner Manual..... http://www.themotorbookstore.com/9781563926914.html

While I don't own this specific manual, I have owned several other Manuals by Chiilton's over the years, such as the 1990 Honda Accord, the 1994 Toyota Camry, and the 1999 Toyota Solara, among a couple of others. I have always found the information in these manuals to be extremely detail-oriented and quite lucid, so I am confident you will feel the same way after seeing this book. By the way, this link is to a mail-order website, BUT, if you would like to see if before you get it, you should be able to find it at any Barnes and Noble bookstore near you. Hope this helps?

PS: I realize this says "Repair Manual", but trust me, there is other info in here as well - you'll see!!!

I have to agree with Bandit 60 regarding going back to the dealership and have someone show you the correct procedure for the items you are having trouble with....

I think I may have an explanation for you regarding the manuals... and I don't want to step on any toes with my explanation, so here goes.

I use to be a parts counterman for Toyota and their service manuals, while having a lot of good information, were difficult at best to understand, unless you were a factory trained technician. We did a little research through Toyota of America and found out a reasonable explanation as to why.

It seems that Toyota of Japan, farms out the translation of it's manuals to the Austrailians. Now, I want to make it perfectly clear here... I am not dissing on anybody, this is just the explanation I received. Granted, the Ausie's speak English, but with a slight twist, compared to what we would call American English. So you have the translation from Japanese to Austrailian English being read by an American who doesn't understand the workings of the vehicle he/she is reading about.... is it any wonder why you are having problems understanding the manual?

Go back to the dealership. They will be happy to help you out.... Besides... that's their job!!

Good luck and I'm glad you like your Prius.... They really are a neat car.

It might be easier to just go to Toyota and buy the complete manual for around 15 bucks.

The best thing to do is ask someone at the dealership to demonstrate it all to you. The sat nav is more powerful and complex than you'd ever use is for anyway. Really good system once you've had a play with it.
